NEWS: STATEMENT OF THE LIBERAL PARTY ON THE MURDER OF CALBAYOG CITY MAYOR RONALDO AQUINO

STATEMENT OF THE LIBERAL PARTY ON THE MURDER OF CALBAYOG CITY MAYOR RONALDO AQUINO
[9 March 2021]

Mayor Ronald Aquino, slain on the way to his son’s birthday party, joins the long list of individuals killed under a regime whose enduring legacy will be its bloodlust and the normalization of murder.

Mayor Aquino was once a Liberal, and even when the situation dictated that he flow with the shifting political sands, his ties with the party remained robust. He remained a liberal in thought and deed: He continued to work to assert the dignity of his constituents and was willing to engage anyone for whom the welfare of his people was front and center.

It comes mere days after the massacre of community organizers in the CALABARZON area, and the successive killings of countless others whose work involved upholding rights, asserting truths, and defending freedoms.

We condemn all murders— and condemn in particular the senseless killing of someone with Mayor Aquino’s track record of service. We are one with his family, friends, and the people of Calbayog in grief and in calling for swift action to bring his murderers to justice.

NEWS: STATEMENT OF THE LEAGUE OF CITIES OF THE PHILIPPINES ON THE KILLING OF CALBAYOG CITY MAYOR RONALDO AQUINO

STATEMENT OF THE LEAGUE OF CITIES OF THE PHILIPPINES ON THE KILLING OF CALBAYOG CITY MAYOR RONALDO AQUINO
08 March 2021

The 146-strong League of Cities of the Philippines condemns in the strongest possible terms the brutal murder by ambush of Calbayog City Mayor Ronaldo P. Aquino. This cowardly act executed in broad daylight is a sobering call for vigilance and a cry for the restoration of absolute peace and order.

Mayor Aquino was an active member of the LCP. He served in the 2013-2016 National Executive Board as Regional Representative and was fondly remembered for his active participation in various programs and projects geared towards fiscal autonomy and good local governance. Mayor Aquino is a friend to many of his colleagues and was well-loved by the residents of Calbayog.

We demand swift and immediate justice for the orchestrated ambush of Mayor Aquino and we appeal to police authorities for a thorough investigation of his killing. We count on them to bring to justice the perpetrators of this dastardly act and seek all witnesses that may provide clarity on the unfortunate incident.

The League, for its part, is even more emboldened to continue to actively pursue efforts against criminality and lawlessness in order to keep our cities and our people safe and secure.

Today, the City of Calbayog lost a good son and we express our deepest condolences to Mayor Aquino's family and the rest of Calbayognons. His life may have ended so abruptly, but his legacy of public service will continue to inspire his fellow civil servants.

STATEMENT OF REP. EDGAR MARY S. SARMIENTO REGARDING THE DEATH OF CALBAYOG CITY MAYOR RONALDO AQUINO

STATEMENT OF REP. EDGAR MARY S. SARMIENTO REGARDING THE DEATH OF CALBAYOG CITY MAYOR RONALDO AQUINO

It is my deepest regret to inform our constituents and my fellow Calbayognons, that our beloved City Mayor Ronaldo P. Aquino died because of a shooting incident.

I would like to extend our deepest condolences to his family, his loved ones, and all of us Calbayognons.

Mayor Ronaldo Aquino and his three companions were killed along Laboyao Bridge, Brgy. Lonoy, Calbayog City. From the statements of the witnesses, they were riding a van when unknown assailants barraged their vehicle with bullets. The victims died as a result of the incident.

As I have repeatedly stated in the past, our city doesn’t deserve this kind of violence. Each time a shooting incident occurs in our district, I always have to ponder why such things have to happen. Why the need for violence? We can achieve more being at peace and in unity instead of being apart. As a practice, I constantly and immediately seek the help of the authorities and remind them to be neutral in the enforcement of the law and of their motto, ‘To Serve and Protect.' I’m hoping therefore that real and lasting justice be given to my dear friend, Mayor Ronaldo ‘Onald’ Aquino.

I am appealing once again to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and this time to the Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Menardo Guevarra to allow the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate what happened since uniformed personnel who are supposed to be the protectors of peace and order were involved in the shooting incident which led to the death of a fellow public servant, no less than the Local Chief Executive of Calbayog City.

As the duly elected Representative of the First District of Samar, upon the demise of Mayor Aquino, I want to assure my constituents that I will do everything possible that justice be served for Mayor Onald Aquino, whose sole intention is to continue the prosperity and the well-being of the City of Calbayog and the betterment of his constituents.

We now have two mayors in the city of Calbayog who were murdered in succession, therefore as the highest elected official of the District, I am calling all my fellow Calbayognons that we stand together as one to give justice to them. We fight for Calbayog!

GOMO
